The post-war building boom

Beyond the historic centre, much of Rome consists of apartment buildings and palazzine from the decades after the war, when the city grew very quickly. That was also a period when asbestos-containing products were used widely in construction. In flats of this age, the materials to look at are floor tiles, adhesives, old boards in false ceilings, and pipes and flues in shared spaces.

What Italians call "eternit"

In Italy asbestos cement is often simply called "eternit", after a well-known brand. It turns up as corrugated roofing on sheds and garages, as water tanks on rooftops and as flues and downpipes. Do not break or drill it. If you need to know whether a sheet or tank contains asbestos, take a small piece without creating dust, or have a specialist do it, and post the piece to us for analysis.
