Why Semlab
Asbestos analysis for you in Amsterdam
From canal houses to post-war neighbourhoods
The canal belt is famous for its old merchant houses, but most Amsterdammers live in later buildings: the brick blocks of the early 20th century, the post-war garden suburbs in the west of the city and the high-rise estates of the 1960s and 1970s. Even in a centuries-old canal house, the kitchen, bathroom and floors have usually been renewed several times. Materials from the decades when asbestos was still in use, such as floor tiles, adhesives, window putty and boards, can turn up behind newer finishes.
Sheds, roofs and boards
In the Netherlands, asbestos-cement sheets were widely used for roofs of sheds, garages and extensions, and flat boards appear in façades, window sills and around boilers. Asbestos cement is firmly bound, so you can send a small piece by post. Dampen the spot, snap off a corner with pliers rather than sawing or drilling, and seal it straight into a bag. If the result is positive, leave removal to a specialist company and check the rules that apply where you live.
