About us

About the laboratory

Semlab is an asbestos analysis laboratory specialising in testing building materials for asbestos. Our aim is to offer reliable, fast and affordable asbestos analysis to everyone who renovates.

Our story

Why Semlab exists

We wanted to make careful asbestos analysis simple and affordable – without hassle or long waits.

We invested in a modern electron microscope and designed our processes so that we can keep the price low without cutting corners on quality. Every sample is analysed with the same care in line with ISO 22262-1.

We believe an asbestos analysis should not hold up a renovation. A fair price and fast results help homeowners and professionals alike make the right decision.

The laboratory is in Espoo, Finland, and you post your sample to us from your own country. The report is emailed to you in English – so the service is fast and straightforward.

Equipment

The laboratory's equipment

Scanning electron microscope (SEM)

The SEM is the heart of the laboratory. The scanning electron microscope uses a focused electron beam to produce highly detailed images of the sample surface. Magnification goes up to 100,000×, so even small asbestos fibres are detected.

  • Detects fibres below 1 μm
  • Produces high-resolution images
  • Lets us examine fibre shape (morphology)

Energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS)

The EDS unit is built into the SEM and measures the chemical composition of the fibres in real time. The LIVE-EDS function analyses the elemental profile of each fibre instantly.

  • Real-time elemental analysis (LIVE-EDS)
  • Elemental mapping (LIVE-MAP)
  • Unambiguous identification of the asbestos type

Quality assurance

Standards and methods

ISO 22262-1

All our analyses follow the international standard ISO 22262-1. The standard sets out the requirements for identifying asbestos in solid materials using SEM electron microscopy and EDS elemental analysis.

ISO 22262-1 is widely regarded as one of the most reliable methods of asbestos analysis. It requires both visual identification of the fibres (morphology) and chemical confirmation (elemental analysis), which minimises false positives and false negatives.

All 6 asbestos types

We identify chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite.

Two-step confirmation

First visual identification in the SEM images, then chemical confirmation with EDS elemental analysis.

Documented process

Every analysis is documented and archived. Reports follow a standardised format.
