From the Baixa to the 20th-century avenues

Lisbon's Baixa was rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1755, and the city later spread out along new avenues and into apartment districts built through the 20th century. Older buildings have usually been modernised several times, and the materials of those renovations are what matter. Floor tiles, adhesives, filler and boards from the decades when asbestos was in use can sit under newer finishes.

Fibre-cement roofs and annexes

Fibre-cement sheets were widely used in Portugal for roofs of annexes, garages, terraces and storage buildings. Older ones may contain asbestos, while newer sheets look similar but do not. If you plan to replace such a roof, send a small piece for analysis first. Remove it carefully, without sawing or drilling, and seal it at once in a tight bag.
