Why Semlab
Asbestos analysis for you in Brussels
Town houses and 1960s apartment blocks
Brussels is known for its narrow row houses, many dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside the apartment blocks and office buildings that went up in large numbers from the 1950s onwards. Asbestos was a common building material across Belgium for decades, and even the Berlaymont, the European Commission headquarters, had to be cleared of it. In an ordinary home the usual suspects are smaller: vinyl floor tiles and their adhesive, textured coatings, boiler-room boards and asbestos-cement panels.
Before the builders arrive
Many Brussels houses have been divided into flats or extended over the years, so different parts of the same building can contain materials from very different decades. Before you open up a floor, a ceiling or a bathroom wall, make a list of what will be removed and take one sample per material. If several flats in the building are being renovated, give each sample a clear name with the flat, room and material so the results stay easy to use.
